As some of you may know-but perhaps many of you don't-myself and two dear friends recently completed a short tour of (mostly) Advent music to Portland and back, with stops in between. Our intention was to let the beauty of song and fellowship convey the true meaning of Advent-the triumph of hope and love in the face of darkness, injustice, and oppression-and to cultivate spaces where we can name and celebrate the signs of hope and joy in our midst.
It was an absolutely wonderful tour: every stop we made (all told we did eight shows) we were received with gratitude and love, and came away affirmed that "the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it".
A wonderful and unexpected surprise came out of the tour: my cousin Dwight (who joined us in playing a beautiful set of music-you can check his music out at human-voices.com)
brought a microphone along to one of our shows, plopped it in front of us and our instruments, and recorded our whole set, which allows us to release a live album of classic Advent songs and original Advent music!
Though, let's say, charmingly lo-fi, the recording pretty well captures the evening: lots of laughter and heart-felt sharing, jaw-dropping singing from Molly, breathtaking cello from Jon, and a number of rollicking sing-alongs. There are also some sneak peeks of some non-Advent originals that we've been working on :). The whole album was recorded at the Green Dragon House, with the exception of "A Child Is Born!", which was recorded at Molly's church in Seattle.
Many thanks to Dwight for his skillful recording with limited resources; to Erin and her housemates for hosting us; to the man at Camas Friends Church who drew the hilarious picture of us that we made the album cover; and for everyone whose presence and singing voices made for so many beautiful evenings along our short tour.
We offer this album as a gift, but if you are able to make a donation along with your download, it would be greatly appreciated: all of the proceeds will go straight towards funding a full-length, studio album Jon, Molly, and I are in the beginning phases of working on.
So enjoy these songs, share as you please, and may you and yours be graced with the fragrance of hope and be sent to share love with someone who needs it.
Love and joy,
